Hello ELA 7 Period 6 students! In today’s class we had discussed part of the poem, “Identity,” by Julio Noboa Polanco. Last week, I had you to annotate (make inferences) while using your sticky notes and highlighters about your ideas/perspective about the poem on September 07-08th. In today’s class, we watched the assigned video for Wit & Wisdom as the virtual teacher discussed the chart I notice and I wonder. Your annotations you had already did helped you complete this assignment. Chris did a very good job on this and A’Drienna you are on the correct track, just keep pushing yourself and I showed you how to do so in class.
Quick synopsis:
Chris and A’Drienna had discussed the word, “weed,” because it was a word used repetitively throughout the poem. So we created a circle graph for the “I Wonder” portion of the chart. A’Drienna had inferred how the word “ugly weed” could mean an ugly plant and also indicate bad grass. Chris added to help A’Drienna by adding things he had inferred about the text. He had discussed how people do not pay attention to it much since it is a weed. He, then, elaborated further to talk about how the it can stand as a metaphor for a person who could be seen as an “outcast.” Chris discussed how he inferred “weed” not only represents a plant, but it also represents people. He added how the weeds take on human characteristics and it is personified (Personification) and since those people are weeds, sometimes they are unnoticed, unseen, and/or unheard. Chris also believes it is a metaphor, but an extended metaphor. Chris also discussed how he inferred “soul and seed” is to be ignored and left alone and the speaker wants people to be able to break free by carrying your own soul and seed instead of someone else doing it for you. He also noticed how the speaker does not want to be targeted by humans (L. 18-19).
Chris had brought up something important during classroom discussion. He had asked, “What if I only have something for what I noticed based on my annotations, but I do not have anything for I wonder?” This will sometimes happen, depending upon the type of reading you are, some people are able to conduct an analysis of a text without having to ask themselves questions about it.
